Supporting Growth in Cambodia
Posted on January 16, 2025
Through our partnership with HeartCry Missionary Society, the Larson Financial Foundation continues to support missionaries around the world. Last year, we reported about how one of their pastors in Cambodia, Pastor Pooy, is using an innovative aquaponics farming technique to feed his community. They recently shared a video to show their progress.
Expanding Aquaponics for Greater Impact
Pastor Pooy’s aquaponics system is designed to produce abundant food with minimal recurring costs. To maximize yield, they installed a linear vegetable system and vertical towers above the existing vegetable beds. This ingenious setup optimizes their limited land for maximum production.
A small pump circulates water from the vegetable bed to the top of the system, allowing gravity to return it, simultaneously oxygenating the water. In the video, they demonstrate how seedlings grown in soil are transferred to sponges within small baskets. The roots extend through the bottom of the baskets and are fed by nutrient-rich water. This method ensures the roots stay moist while the vegetables grow upward toward the sun, resulting in fresh produce.
Harvesting Fish and Feeding a Community
Despite challenges, such as a leak in their second fish tank currently under repair, the system continues to flourish. Once the second tank is fully operational, Pastor Pooy anticipates harvesting approximately 350 pounds of fish per month. This sustainable source of protein, combined with the aquaponics-grown vegetables, provides nutritious food for the community while reducing dependency on external supplies.
HeartCry’s Mission
HeartCry Missionary Society plays a vital role in their partnership with the Larson Financial Foundation. By focusing on training and mobilizing indigenous missionaries like Pastor Pooy, HeartCry provides qualified, elder men the theological resources and supplemental financial support to aid in their call. HeartCry’s work is sustained by the prayers and generosity of likeminded donors who seek to aid faithful churches. The Larson Foundation partners with HeartCry to provide expertise and resources for special projects which aid the work for long term sustainable growth. Transformative projects, like the aquaponics system in Cambodia, are crucial to the work.
God’s Faithfulness and Community Support
God’s faithfulness is evident in every little victory in this project. Each success is a testament to the enduring support, intercession, and kindness of both the partners of HeartCry and the Larson Foundation. These efforts not only provide for immediate physical needs but also serve as a foundation for spiritual and community growth for the years to come.
